Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) in Leh is one of the highest commercial airports globally at an altitude of 3,256 meters (10,682 ft). It operates daily direct flights connecting Leh with Delhi, Mumbai, Jammu, Chandigarh, and Srinagar.

2. Reaching Ladakh by Road

A. The Manali-Leh Highway (NH 3)

Spanning approximately 428 km through Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, this route crosses iconic passes including Rohtang Tunnel / Atal Tunnel, Baralacha La (16,040 ft), Nakee La, Lachung La, and Tanglang La (17,480 ft). The highway is typically open from late May through October.

B. The Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH 1)

Covering 434 km from the Kashmir Valley, this route features a gentler elevation gradient, making it ideal for gradual altitude acclimatization.

The road passes Sonamarg, crosses Zoji La (11,575 ft), passes the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, and descends through Lamayuru into Leh. Both of these routes are world-renowned for motorcycle expeditions and scenic mountain road tripping.

3. Connecting by Rail

There is no direct rail line to Ladakh. The closest major broad-gauge railway hub is Jammu Tawi / Udhampur (approx. 700 km away) or Chandigarh. From Jammu or Srinagar, travelers connect to Leh via private taxi, shared cab, or bus services.

4. Reaching Ladakh by Public & Private Bus

State transport corporations (HRTC and JKSRTC) and private deluxe coaches operate seasonal bus services connecting Manali and Srinagar to Leh. These routes operate with scheduled overnight halts in Keylong, Sarchu, or Kargil.
